Gambhir’s Strong Opinion on India-Pakistan Cricket Matches
During an event in Delhi, Gambhir was asked if India should keep playing against Pakistan in multi-team tournaments like the Asia Cup or ICC events.
He replied, “My personal answer is absolutely no.”
He added, “Till all this [terrorism] doesn’t stop, there should be nothing between India and Pakistan.”

On April 22, a terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, killed 26 innocent people.
After this, the Indian government took strong steps against Pakistan, such as:
- Stopping some parts of the Indus Water Treaty
- Closing the Attari border crossing
- Reducing diplomatic relations with Pakistan
India-Pakistan Cricket Relations
India has not played a full bilateral series with Pakistan since January 2013.
The two teams only face each other in big tournaments like:
- Asia Cup
- ICC World Cups
- Champions Trophy
The last time they played was in the 2025 Champions Trophy in Dubai. They might meet again in:
- Women’s ODI World Cup (this year)
- Men’s Asia Cup (this year)
- Men’s T20 World Cup (2026)
But Gambhir believes cricket should not be more important than national security.
He said, “No cricket match, Bollywood film, or any other interaction is more important than the lives of Indian soldiers and citizens.”
He also said that the final decision is not his but the Indian government and BCCI’s. He respects whatever they decide.
Gambhir on Team Selection: “Coach Doesn’t Select Players”
Gambhir also spoke about team selection for the upcoming five-Test tour of England in June.
Some fans were wondering if Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should be picked after their struggles in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
However, both played key roles in India’s Champions Trophy win this year.

Gambhir made it clear: “A coach’s job is not selecting the team. That’s the selectors’ job. The coach only picks the playing XI for a match.”
He added, “As long as Kohli and Rohit keep performing, they should play.
No coach, selector, or BCCI can force them to retire. If they play well, they can even play till 45!”
Final Thoughts
Gambhir’s strong stance shows that sports and politics cannot be separated when it comes to India-Pakistan relations.
