Jos Buttler Resigns
Jos Buttler has decided to step down as England’s white-ball captain after the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 ends.
The 34-year-old shared this news in Karachi before England’s last league match against South Africa.
Buttler said, “This is the right decision for me and the team.
Hopefully, someone else can take over and work with Baz (Brendon McCullum) to bring the team back on track.”

He made this announcement during a press conference on Friday, February 28.
The decision came after England’s early exit from the Champions Trophy.
They lost two matches in a row against Australia and Afghanistan in Lahore.
Before this tournament, England had also struggled in ODI matches, losing 0-3 to India just a week earlier in Pakistan and the UAE.
Buttler explained, “This tournament was important for my captaincy. But after two losses and not doing well in previous tournaments, I felt it was time for me to step down.
It’s sad, but I think it’s the right decision.”
He added, “Right now, I feel sad and disappointed, but I know these feelings will pass.
I’ll focus on enjoying cricket again and look back at how special it was to captain my country.”
Buttler became England’s white-ball captain after Eoin Morgan retired in 2022.

He led the team to win the T20 World Cup in Australia that same year. However, after that, England’s performance dropped.
They were knocked out early in the 2023 ODI World Cup and lost to India in the semifinals of the T20 World Cup.
To improve the team, the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) appointed Brendon McCullum as the white-ball coach starting in 2025.
But even with McCullum’s help, England lost 9 out of 10 white-ball games this year.
Buttler captained England in 44 ODIs and 51 T20Is, winning 18 and 26 matches, respectively.
His win-loss ratio in ODIs is the second-worst for any England captain who has led in at least 15 games.
Buttler said, “I’m sad about how things turned out. I was excited to work with Brendon and hoped for a quick improvement, but it didn’t happen.
Now, it feels like the right time for a change, both for me and the team.”
McCullum also shared his thoughts: “I feel really sad for Jos.
He has worked very hard as captain and always tried to bring out the best in the team.
People forget he won the World Cup just a couple of years ago, and that achievement will always be his.
He has done a great job, even when many key players were unavailable. It’s very selfless of him to step down and let someone else take charge.”
McCullum added, “Jos is still a very important player for us.
We’ll find ways to make sure he continues to contribute and have a big impact on the team.”
